Troubleshooting HVAC Issues

Problems with your HVAC system can occur at any time. These problems are not only inconvenient but they can be costly as well. The best way to avoid serious issues is with regularly scheduled HVAC system maintenance. If you are unsure what is wrong with your system please don’t hesitate to call a trained technician. The following are the most common HVAC problems and solutions.

Dirty Air Filters

Dirty air filters are the most common cause of heating and cooling system problems. When dust and debris accumulates on air filters it restricts air flow, forcing your HVAC system to work harder to heat and cool your home. This results in higher energy costs and unnecessary strain to your system, increasing the likelihood of damage or breakdown. Air filters should be checked and changed regularly.

Blocked Air Vents & Registers

This issue is quite common in a home or a vacation rental, especially when people don’t agree on the thermostat setting. Someone gets hot or cold and moves a piece of furniture in front of the AC register. The next thing you know, your HVAC airflow is been compromised. Check your air vents and registers for air flow.

Clogged Drain Lines

The condensate drain helps remove condensation produced by your air conditioner’s evaporator coil. If the drain lines aren’t properly cleaned, algae and mold can grow inside and clog the drain. This results in elevated humidity, musty odors and water damage inside your home. Check and clean drain lines regularly to prevent problems.

Low Refrigerant

In order for your HVAC system to operate properly it must have the correct level of refrigerant. Low refrigerant can cause loss of cooling capability, increased energy costs, frosting or freezing of the condenser coil and compressor motor damage. Refrigerant leaks are typically caused by system vibrations. An experienced HVAC technician can quickly locate leaks and repair your system.

Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils help ensure that your HVAC system is working as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. These important coils are home to your system’s refrigerant. Warm air from your home is sent through the condenser coils where it is absorbed by the refrigerant and removed from your home. Dirty condenser coils can lead to reduced energy efficiency, reduced cooling capabilities and reduced lifespan of your HVAC system. Dirty condenser coils should be cleaned by a professional HVAC technician.

Thermostat Problems

A number of problems can occur with your thermostat. Sometimes problems are caused by simply having the wrong setting for the season or your preferred level of comfort. Occasionally, the thermostat will stop working and need to be replaced. A qualified HVAC technician can help you identify and solve problems with your thermostat.
