Is A Whole-House Air Purification System Right For My Home?

Air Purification | HVAC | Outer Banks, NC

Allergy sufferers, asthma sufferers, and dust breathers alike know that filtered air is better air. And while it’s nearly impossible — nay, completely impossible — to control what, and how we breathe out in the world, the opposite is true at home.

Start At The Source — That Is, Your HVAC System

Sure, you could buy a houseplant or four; you could purchase a standalone air purification system; or you could hire Harbinger, NC’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning experts (That’s us, Air Handlers OBX) to install a whole-house air purifier. They’re more efficient, will produce cleaner air, and because the filters are built into the return-air ductwork, they use no extra energy.

Cleaner air, and energy efficiency: Seems like a common sense solution, right? Right. Now the only question remains, which type of whole-house air purification system is right for you?

Choose A Furnace Filter

If your home is heated with the aid of a forced-air furnace, you’ve already got a basic air-filtration system in the matted-fiberglass filter you change once a month. These filters are designed to protect your furnace (and your lungs) from large dust particles, but they won’t block the microscopic ones. And everyone knows it’s the little bitty ones that cause the most trouble.

Invest in a pleated filter instead. Pleated filters are slightly more expensive ($15 or so), but they have to be changed less often, and they’re also better equipped to attract allergens like pollen and pet dander.

Choose An Extended Media Filter

Imagine you buy a whole bunch of furnace filters to stack one on top of the other: There you’ve got yourself an extended media filter. On the inside, these boxy units are more accordion-like, making them more effective than regular fiberglass filters. The certified HVAC installation professionals at Air Handlers OBX will, at your request, install the larger filter holder directly into your ductwork, and get you on your way to purified air. The filters themselves must be replaced annually.

Choose An Electronic Filter

Now we’re really getting high-tech: Electronic filters must also be installed directly into your ductwork, and as air passes through, a high-voltage current zaps (BZZ!) the dust particles, and send them straight to oppositely charged collector plates at the other side of the unit. Electronic filters, sometimes called electrostatic precipitators, work especially well on smoke particles that cannot be trapped by regular furnace, or media filters.

Choose An Ultraviolet Filter

Germaphobe much? An ultraviolet filter may be right for installation in your home. These are typically sold as add-ons when your purchase, and install a whole-house electronic filter. An ultraviolet light will exterminate any airborne bacteria and viruses before they have a chance to make their way into circulation, and into your lungs.

Indoor air quality plays a big role in the health and safety of those with allergies or asthma, and whether you believe it or not, the unfiltered air inside your home can be up to FIVE TIMES more polluted than the air outside. It’s true. So if you’re worried about the air you’re breathing, call Air Handlers OBX today, and let’s talk about whole-house air purification.
